Pressure mounts on the Nairobi governor Mike Sonko in naming his deputy governor. The Nairobi MCAs called out on their boss to name deputy governor as city hall continues to have power vacuum.

According to the MCA's, the governor will have to appoint his deputy governor as cartels continue to fasten their moves to frustrate the city hall operations.

On Friday, Governor Mike Sonko was said to be grilled in meetings with his strategists looking for solutions to his latest 5.8 billion tax debt that could lead to the section of key County Officials alongside the controversial garbage tenders with a Ksh. 20 million deposit in his account.

Article 182 of the constitution Sub-article 4 reads,  “If a vacancy occurs in the of office of county governor and that of deputy county governor, or if the deputy county governor is unable to act, the speaker of the county assembly shall act as county governor.”

Nairobi county has controversial power vacuum after the county speaker was impeached by the MCAs but later reinstated by the courts. Nairobi Speaker Beatrice Elachi was overthrown from office on September 6, 2018.

The MCAs refused to be led by the impeached speaker and appointed an acting speaker.

The MCAs now want governor Sonko to name his deputy so that operations could continue when he is away or in case found guilty from the garbage collection graft.

"We will be happy to work with the deputy governor. Our county assembly has no professionalism. We impeached our speaker, the court reinstated her, we nominated an acting speaker but the court quashed his nomination" MCAs stated in a joint press statement.
