Sudanese celebrate their freedom at the Capital, Khartoum. They are celebrating after a long battle with the overthrown leader Omar Al-Bashir.

Enthusiastic crowds took to the streets of Sudan to celebrate the first anniversary of the uprising that toppled veteran autocrat Omar al-Bashir and to demand justice for slain protesters.

Hundreds of thousands of people marched without incident in different districts of the capital Khartoum and other cities, AFP journalists and witnesses said.

“We’re revolutionaries, we’ll finish our mission,” demonstrators chanted to the beat of a drum in Khartoum, while motorists hung Sudanese flags from their cars.

“We did something unique with this peaceful revolution we’re proud of it,” said Siham Abdelrahman, marching with his flag-waving comrades in the capital.

“Our celebration will not finish until we get justice for our martyrs,” said Nahla Mohamed.

In the town of Atbara, the cradle of the revolt, a crowd of thousands turned out to greet two trains arriving from Khartoum carrying hundreds of cheering people for a week of festivities.

“The revolution will continue,” declared one banner carried by the protesters.

“Either we bring them justice or die like them,” read another alongside pictures of demonstrators who died.

“I’ll remember the first day of our protest under tear gas and live ammunition, which didn’t stop us,” said Hana Hussein, 21.

The army blocked roads leading to its Khartoum headquarters, where the protesters had staged a weeks-long sit-in outside to demand the end of military rule.
