Kenya to import high-speed diesel trains from Spain. Already plans underway to upgrade the Old railway line in Nairobi suburbs.


The Cabinet approves the Ksh 2.5 billion budget for the upgrade of the Nairobi commuter railway network, paving the way for the importation of faster diesel locomotives from Spain.

The move strived at growing the use of railway transport in the capital city.

The Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) is set to float the tender for the railway track upgrade in January in a plan that seeks to grow commuter numbers tenfold and cut the use of matatus.

KRC's acting Managing Director Philip Mainga said that the budget approvals, which had been the key barrier for the track upgrade, had been approved
