Kilifi County Assembly has passed a Motion for the formation of Safe Haven, homes for rape victims in Kilifi County.

In a motion moved by Hon. Martha Koki Musyoki, the member proposed that the safe havens be put in every Sub-county and shall be temporary homes for victims of physical and sexual abuse.

Throughout the debate, Members of the County Assembly agreed that cases of defilement are on the rise across the entire County.

Victims end up in vicious cycles of abuse due to lack of safe havens where they can access counselling, support and protection.

According to the County Director of Children in Kilifi County, 7,678 cases of defilement had been reported in the county between June 2016 and June 2017, most affected areas being Magarini and Ganze Sub counties.

If this motion is implemented victims of abuse shall have a safe space as they await healing and justice.
