Kakamega County General Teaching and Referral Hospital deserted after Doctors and nurses at fled from the casualty ward and emergency wing after a patient with coronavirus-like symptoms was brought to the hospital.

The hospital is yet to receive enough protective gear. According to the Kenya National Union of Nurses official Mr Renson Bulunya, the patient was left alone in the room.

" When I got to the hospital, there was fear after a patient was put in isolation for exhibiting coronavirus-like symptoms. The nurses fled from the casualty ward because they do not have face masks and gloves. The patient was left alone in the room, " he said.

The hospital administration ordered all the gates to be closed with no new patients being allowed in.  The patient has since been taken to an isolation room within the hospital.

Mr Bulunya now asks the authorities to have the two Red Cross Kenya personnel, who brought the patient to the hospital, to be tested. This claim, however, was refuted by Emergency and Medical Services, a subsidiary of Red Cross. They claimed that the personnel did not handle the patient.
