Senators want the government to ban Miraa chewing and transportation. The Senators claim that the contact between the Miraa vendors, farmers and consumer could be riskier in the coronavirus fight.


Led by Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr, the Senators wants the government to ban Khat chewing until the menace is solved.  Embu Senator Njeru Ndwiga who is the Chairperson, Senate Committee on Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries said banning Miraa will be a solution as Miraa strings are not sanitized before chewing.


" Miraa farmer cannot fumigate the trees. They pick with their bare hands. The government need to think about Miraa and Muguka. Though My county(Embu) leads on Muguka farming, we have no choice. The government need to ban for some days. The Miraa chewing can be a source of spreading the contagious disease, " senator Njeru Ndwiga said.


" Even the fruits we buy. They must be cleaned. Remember those fruits are picked by a machine but hands. We need to be extra cautious in fighting this disease, " Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr said.


Mr Ali Ibrahim Roba is the Governor of Mandera County has already banned the transportation of Miraa and Muguka in the county.
