Kenya mourns the death of late Prof. Ali Alamin Mazrui primary school classmate Professor Mohamed Hyder. The renowned scholar Prof. Mohamed Hyder dies after a longtime ailment. He died at the age of 88.

One of the finest sons of the coastal soil. The grandfather of zoology as widely known. He immensely contributed to the political arena through his civic education foundation. He was a good man according to his longtime friend Prof. Shaukat.


Prof Mohamed Hyder was born in Mombasa in 1932. At the Mombasa old town, the scholar Prof. Mohamed Hyder is known for fighting for education changes in the country.


He got married to Samira Mohamed Hyder. He went to Serani Boys School (Mombasa) then later joined Makerere University College, Kampala. Other schools he attended include Chelsea College of Science and Technology, London, St Andrews University, St Andrews. Fife, Scotland and Leeds University, Leeds, England.


He was a teacher at Khamis Secondary School before joining the University of Nairobi as a zoology lecturer and became the grandfather and a Professor of zoology at the University.

His friend Prof. Abdulrazak Shaukat broke the news of the demise of the scholar at the onset of Ramadhan. He said that he knows Prof. Mohammed Hyder as a cool and very resourceful person.


He was the chairman and among the founding fathers of zoology at the Nairobi University.
