Kenya Bureau(KNBS) survey shows 30 percent of Kenyans are unable to pay rent

Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) survey as presented by Treasury cabinet secretary Ukur Yattan shows 21.5 percent of Kenyans incapable to meet their monthly responsibilities in a timely manner prior to the virus outbreak in the country.




The reasons were illustrated. The incapacity to pay rent in April was because of reduced income/earnings at 52.9 percent and the temporary loss of jobs at 22.4 percent and small businesses.




Only 59.8 percent of Kenyans were able to meet their rental payments as per date agreed with landlords during the month.



Only 8.7 percent of the surveyed households reporting a waiver/relief from landlords. Majority of landlords who introduced waivers are from Kiambu, Nakuru, Kirinyaga while none was from Kilifi, Kwale and Siaya.


The of May and June will be the hardest months if no interventions will be made. More Kenyans are worrying about rent and that was the main reason for getting back to small business in the middle of the pandemic.
