Education CS George Magoha says the ministry is taking drastic measures, including scrapping boarding facilities, to keep children safe at local schools.

CS Magoha now says the state has considered localising teachers to schools within their villages.

Both Primary and Secondary school learners will be integrated into institutions within their localities when schools resume in January 2021.

The CS said the government is diving into scrapping or suspending boarding facilities by January 2021.

“Futuristically, we shall focus mainly on day schools. It will be difficult maintaining social distance in the cubicle of eight learners,” Magoha told the National Assembly's Committee on Education last week.

Teachers older than 58 years will need to be shielded because they are more at risk of serious illness should they contract the virus.

“There are sizeable members who are over 58 years old... These senior people and we will ensure they are given duties that do not expose them to the virus,” he said.

More cash has been allocated to schools to improve and expand the schools' infrastructure as the existing facilities do not guarantee the required physical distance.
