President Uhuru Kenyatta directs an immediate establishment of a national reference group on COVID-19.

At his 11th state address on the disease directed Health CS Mutahi Kagwe to establish a team that will be mandated with the formulation of strategies to identify challenges within the health systems and make recommendations that will see an increase in representation of county governments in boards of health agencies.

“This group should establish the Kenya Covid-19 Consortium that will allow research institutions to come together and partner with international bodies towards development and testing of the vaccine here in Kenya,” he said.

Uhuru added that the country had made walks in the attempts to flatten the curve, there still exist challenges, one of them being that the disease is now manifesting in the counties.

“We have made good progress in our determination to eliminate the virus especially in our cities of Nairobi and Mombasa, however, the situation is moving to the counties and rural areas. More needs to be done to increase the pace of expansion of health systems,” he said.
