Security officers in Nyatike are now probing the circumstances into which led to the death of a pastor who died after a tent plunged on him during a night vigil chaperoned by mourners at Ongoche village in Nyatike.

Village elder Joakim Oyoo said the deceased recognised as Peter Ochieng was among numerous people who went to the tent following heavy rain.

Mourners had installed a tent to condole with the bereaved family.

The family had lost their kin at the beginning of the week.

As the evening advanced, the tent was hurled off its moorings by strong winds and ended up burying the pastor in a mess of shade and metal.

He died due to his wounds before he could get to the Migori Level Four Hospital.  His body is at the Migori Level Four Hospital Mortuary.

A few metres from the scene of the incident, a cow was also killed by lighting shortly after.

Nyatike sub-county Police Commander Stella Too said the incidents were not reported but said officers were conducting investigations.

She threatened legal action on those found holding outlawed night vigils, saying it’s unfortunate that people are still sneaking to night events which have been banned by the Government.
