Police officers on Sunday tossed tear gas outside the AIPCA Kenol Church in Murang'a where Deputy President William Ruto attended Harambee.

Chaos had preceded the second-in-command’s arrival at the church event, with rival youth groups clashing in Kenol town.

The DP who is being hosted by Kandara MP Alice Wahome arrived at around 10 am when calm had been restored; the church service began shortly after.

He was accompanied by among others Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria, and Nyandarua Woman Representative.

“I want to tell you, Mheshimiwa Kimari, na wewe Kibicho, na wewe Matiang’i, na wewe Sabina Chege na hao wakora wengine, mko na watoto wenu, next time leteni watoto wenu na bibi zenu waandamane,” Nyoro said.

The legislator said over 30 people had received calls to show up at a hotel in Thika where plans to disrupt the Ruto event were hatched.

Addressing the church,  Nyoro further claimed that Murang’a woman rep Sabina Chege had picked a stipend from the Ministry of Interior to sponsor the protests.

“We know, the money was picked from the office next to yours naibu wa rais, the ministry of interior and insecurity, they tried that in Kisii, they failed, they have tried it here, raia imekataa,” Nyoro added.

Meanwhile, Kandara MP Alice Wahome who was hosting DP Ruto said her three calls to the Murang’a County Commander Josphat Kinyua on Saturday night was ignored.

“I called him three times, he did not pick, I wanted to tell him I was aware of the planned protests, he did not call back,” Wahome said.

The Sunday morning drama paralyzed transport on the Kenol-Murang’a road and left one person dead and various others nursing serious wounds.

Kenol residents who addressed the media said they repelled a gang of youths who had been brought in from Thika and Kiandutu aboard four buses.

Kenol residents said they fought back a group of youth who had been shipped from Thika and Kiandutu aboard five buses.

One woman who was ambushed by angry residents and nearly killed said they had been paid Ksh.1000 with directions to strike and block DP Ruto’s meeting.
