Dr Nira Patel

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) announces the death of one of their members, Dr Nira Patel.

KMPDU says Dr Patel, who was a dental surgeon trained in orthodontics, succumbed to COVID-19 complications.

“We grieve the passing on of Dr Nira Patel due to COVID-19 complications. A dental surgeon specialized in orthodontics, a mentor to many and was recently offered with the life membership of the Kenya Dental Association. Condolences to the family and friends. May her soul Rest In Peace,” said KMPDU on Saturday.

Dr Nira Patel becomes latest medical practitioner to die due to coronavirus after Dr Anthony Were, a consultant at the Kenyatta National Hospital and a senior doctor, who died on Friday.

Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Secretary-General Dr Chibanzi Mwachonda eulogised Dr Were as a teacher, mentor and leader in nephrology, stating that he was the president of the African Association of Nephrology and the deputy director of the East African kidney institute.

Just two weeks, the country has lost at least six senior medical officers to the global pandemic.

On Friday last week, the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union announced the deaths of Dr Emarah Ashraf, Dr Vladimir Schukin, Dr Hudson Inyangala, Dr Robert Ayisi and Dr Hudson Alumera, a periodontal surgeon.
