Police car taking Wesley Mutai, 40, from Bandiat Village

Wesley Mutai, 40, from Bandiat Village in Silibwet Location, Kuresoi South Sub-County in Nakuru County murdered his wife before trying to commit suicide.

Mr Mutai fatally hit his 32-year-old spouse, Naomi Chebet, with jembe in shamba on Saturday, November 28 morning.

Mutai and Chebet had been together as husband and wife for only three months.

Silibwet Location Senior Chief, Paul Keter said the two were employed as informal workers in a nearby garden and were working Saturday morning when a conflict between them began.

“It was then that Mutai whacked his wife in the back of her head with a jembe before attempting suicide by slicing his throat with a kitchen knife,” said Chief Keter.

The Chief added that the suspect has a drinking problem and has, on numerous moments linked to various conflicts with neighbours in the village.

“Recently, he ousted his mother away from their ancestral land, and sold a significant size of the land,” said Chief Keter.

Neighbours said Mutai was married before, but his wife escaped her marital home with their four children 11 years ago due to same habits.

The witness who is a 14-year-old boy was walking past the scene and noticed that Mutai had killed his spouse.

Then the suspect was suffering in pain after attempting suicide.

The teenager signalled other villagers, who raced to the scene and took Mutai to Olenguruone Sub-County Hospital for emergency care.

The body of Mutai’s wife, Chebet, was taken to the hospital’s mortuary by police.

Chebet recently moved in with Mutai, whom she has lived with as her husband for three months now.

Chebet had two children from her previous marriage. The children are aged 13 and 2 years old.
