Handshake brothers President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga now face an uphill task on selling BBI when their litmus test at Msambweni suffered a major blow.
The win by candidate allied to Deputy President William Ruto has complicated the BBI process.
ODM and Jubilee losing its seats at Msambweni, Lake View, Gaturi and Mbale is a sign of things falling apart at the BBI leadership.
Feisal Badder's victory in the Msambweni MP by-election, as well as Gaturi ward and Lake View, have been lauded with a strong political statement to the handshake duo.
Deputy President William Ruto supported Feisal after Jubilee declined to field a candidate citing handshake, hence that can be assumed that he had beaten the Raila and Uhuru handshake side.
Eliud Owalo, a former Raila aide now Ruto ally, says the election result has a relation on the 2022 general elections.
“Taking the Msambweni result as a baseline value, the conceived results of Kenya's 2022 elections can be projected in entirety,” Owalo said.
Raila lately said the Msambweni vote would be a litmus test for the popularity of the Building Bridges Initiative. Now his litmus test brings negative results to the BBI agenda.
“This election is not just about Kwale or Msambweni but will show where we are heading to. We are promoting the BBI at the moment. The sifter is here. It will define if BBI will win or not. If ODM is beaten here, BBI will have a problem,” the ODM leader said.
Mr Omar Boga of ODM lost with a margin of 4,807 votes in the results declared by IEBC on Tuesday night.
