The Supreme Court, conducted a special court ceremony to pay tribute in his honour,  being his last day in office.

Mwilu is mandated to act in the position until the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) recruits a new Chief Justice in the coming months.

“Monday, January 11 is CJ Maraga’s last day in office. In this respect, the Supreme Court will hold a special court ceremony/tribute in his honour at 9:30 am, " read a letter circulated on Saturday.

"Thereafter, CJ will hand over the instruments of power to the acting CJ Philomena Mwilu,” reads an invitation to the ceremony.

Maraga has been the country’s Chief Justice since 2016 after he replaced Willy Mutunga who took early retirement.

"I will not attempt to list all accomplishments of CJ David Maraga as these are well known. Yours, my Lord has been a life of service. I have gained immensely from being your DCJ. You leave a proud, irreversible legacy, " said DCJ Mwilu.

He secured the job after beating Justices Smokin Wanjala, Alnashir Visram, Roselyne Nambuye, Mbogholi Msagha, the late Senior Counsel Philip Kitonga and outspoken US-based lawyer Prof Makau Mutua.
