The majority of youth in Embu were rejected from Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recruitment ongoing exercise over dental problems caused by chewing miraa.

The youths who turned up in large numbers at Embu Stadium were found to have broken or damaged teeth and automatically excluded from joining the forces.

Some were found to have holes owing to decay and advised to see dentists.

Lt. Col. Philip Okoth, who oversaw the recruitment, said most of the youth had other qualifications but the law requires a recruit to be physically and mentally fit.

Okoth said that they recorded the lowest number of recruits with very few of them being female.

According to him, only nine men and one woman were recruited from Nembure and Central Divisions with over a thousand attendees.

He said several youths had no original certificates and missed the chance while others over-age as the condition was 28 years and below.

Okoth insisted that the recruitment was free and fair for all, warning that anyone found asking for bribes will be dealt with.

He asked the youth to take such recruitment seriously saying the predominance of drug abuse and lack of guidance is to blame.

Madrine Kariuki, 23, the only female recruited in the exercise recognised her efforts and could not hide the happiness.

“This has been my dream job to offer service to the country as frontline personnel,” she said.
