Breastfeeding mother killing her son for not breastfeeding news in Homabay

Homa Bay Court requests a mental evaluation for a Night Akoth Otieno, 23, who purportedly killed her one-year-old baby boy for refusing to breastfeed.

Night Akoth Otieno hit her third born son named Briton Ochieng with a blunt object after he professedly declined to breastfeed.


Mrs Akoth appeared before Ndhiwa Principal Magistrate Mary Ochieng on Monday morning.


The Magistrate ordered that she undergoes a mental evaluation at Homa Bay County Referral Hospital before taking a plea in seven days.


The mother of three was detained over the weekend following the event on Saturday at around 9 pm.

The woman’s husband was not at home during the event according to the Police reports.

The area Assistant chief of Konyago sub–Location Gabriel Nyatame, said that the woman suffers from a mental ailment.

“She was annoyed when her third born son declined to breastfeed after making several attempts,” he said.


The Assistant chief said the woman took a sharp machete and killed the baby inside the house leaving the head and the body lying independently in a pond of blood.


Neighbours rushed to the scene tied her with a rope before they signalled the area administration officer and filed a report at Ndhiwa Police Station.


Mr Nyatame said upon examination, the woman admitted that she executed her son after he denied to breastfeed numerous times.

The woman was delivered to police officers and confined at Ndhiwa Police Station while the son’s body laid at the Manyataa Kobodo mortuary.
