Kikuyu benga musician and producer Albert Gacheru aka Gacheru Wamaitu of the Mariru fame is dead. 

Albert Gacheru of Mwendwa wakwa mariru song fame Recorded in 1990s. 31 years on Albert songs are still strong even after the demise of the lawyer, a businessman and a director at the MCSK. 

Gacheru died at the Kenyatta National Hospital on Monday night, April 5, his elder brother, Julius Kiarie said. 

His brother said that he had been undergoing treatment for severe respiratory distress syndrome, a type of pneumonia. 

The musician was born at Boiman, Gathanji in Nyandurua County. Wamaitu started singing while in Class Five in 1974 but he produced his first song in 1977. 

Today, he has delivered over 188 songs, making him one of the most productive Benga musicians in the country.
