Africa Cup of Nations hints that the tournament may be cancelled


Officials from the Africa Cup of Nations hints that the tournament may be cancelled due to the emergence of the Omicron coronavirus variant as reported by a West Africa media from France.


The tournament was scheduled to be on between January 9 and February 6 in Cameron.

Premier league teams were seeing a void in their teams with a number of Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea players set to take part, missing a number of Premier League fixtures as a result.


The French outlet RMC Sport alleged that the Central African Federation (CAF) could cancel the competition as fears surrounding the Omicron variant which is increasing daily.

However, The Daily Mail have noted that AFCON chiefs are persistent that the tournament won't be cancelled.


If the tournament is halted, the Gunners will have Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Nicolas Pepe, Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny available for their matches at the start of the year.


Liverpool will save for Sadio Mane, Nabby Keita and EPL top scorer Mohamed Salah.
