President Uhuru Kenyatta officially commissions the Mombasa Shipyard.


President Uhuru Kenyatta officially commissions the Mombasa Shipyard in Mtongwe under the Kenya Shipyards Limited ( KSL).


In May 2021, the President launched the Kenya Shipyard Limited as a limited company in Kisumu Shipyard, formed as part of Government efforts to expand the contribution of the blue economy to Kenya's socioeconomic transformation, and has a broad mandate of catalysing ship building activities.

The shipyard will be a leading catalyst in the development of shipbuilding in Eastern Africa by offering world class services in a sustainable and efficient manner.


The Mombasa Kenya Shipyard Limited slipway, has a capacity to handle 4,000 tonne vessels which are 150 metres long, 30 metres high, 30 metres wide and is set to commence operations with the refit of KNS Shupavu immediately.


The Kisumu Shipyard has already started its operations in the construction of the Wagon Ferry ( MV Uhuru 11 ).
