Indomitable Lions kick off the 2021 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations facing Burkina Faso in the Group A opener.
The Indomitable Lions have bagged the tournament five times with most recently in 2017. It is among the favourites to win the Cup of Nations again on 6 February in Yaoundé.
Toni Conceição’s team won four matches heading into the CAN opener as well as secured their place in the third round of World Cup qualifying with a 1-0 victory over Ivory Coast.
With no higher quality than before when they got back-to-back titles in 2000 and 2002, the bulk of the 2017 championship side remain at Conceição’s disposal.
The Lions are good in the attack, to the extent that Bayern Munich’s Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting may have to play second fiddle to Vincent Aboubakar, scorer of the winning goal in 2017 and who missed the 2019 edition.
They got another boost as Ajax goalkeeper André Onana joined them. He has been out for nine months after testing positive for a prohibited substance.
