Arsenal midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles

Arsenal midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles will join Roma on loan for the remainder of the season.

Maitland-Niles wanted to move out the Gunners after being left frustrated with his lack of game time this season.

The 24-year-old was convinced to wait by manager Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu the previous summer when Everton made an unpunctual try to sign the versatile midfielder.

Arsenal originally requested an obligation clause to be incorporated in the deal with Roma which would be associated with the appearances of Maitland-Niles.

However, Roma's current financial circumstance implies that they were only able to submit a preliminary loan fee, with talks anticipated to proceed over a permanent move towards the end of Maitland-Niles' spell in Italy.

Maitland-Niles posted on social media at the time a summer move fell through: "All I want to do is go where I'm wanted and where I'm going to play."

"First of all, I see a different player in terms of his urgency, his commitment, the clarity in his play, his purpose," the Gunners manager told correspondents.

"Since we made the decision, it was clear what I was seeing that I wanted him to stay because he was going to be useful," Arteta added.
