Do not use these words, NCIC publishes hate speech words list

 

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) is planning to release a list of coded hate speech phrases.

The commission's attempts to minimize hate speech events before the August 9th elections, according to NCIC Chairperson Samuel Kobia, include publishing the forbidden phrases that may fuel ethnic tensions.

Political rallies and discussion programs will be prohibited from using the terms.

According to the official, some politicians and members of the public use the phrases casually without contemplating their impact on the country's political climate.

"We're going to put out a list of Kiswahili, English, and vernacular words that are coded hate speech," Kobia said during a press conference in Nairobi on Friday.

"Will aid in the containment of hate speech and the security of our nation throughout the electioneering period."

NCIC also keeps an eye on radio and television stations, as well as social media platforms, for any hate speech or potential political violence in the country.

"We're also in negotiations with Kenya's Inter-religious Council, with whom we'll meet next week to develop peace messages that will be read out in churches, mosques, and temples to ensure that the entire nation gets frequent messages of peace," Kobia added.

At the same time, Kobia affirmed that ODM leader Raila Odinga will testify before the commission once he returns from his trip to the United Kingdom in connection with his recent 'madoadoa' statements in Wajir County.
