Alvin Linus Chivondo charged for stealing food at Naivas supermarket photo

The 22-year-old guy was sentenced to prison after admitting to stealing five litres of Fresh Fri cooking oil and other food goods worth Ksh 3,165 from Naivas Supermarket.

While sentencing the suspects, Chief Magistrate Wendy Micheni observed that the supermarket had been a victim of shoplifters and that she had pardoned four other offenders facing identical charges as of April 12, 2022.

In his plea, Alvin Linus Chivondo, a casual worker, told the court that he and his family went three days without eating before deciding to take the food.

"I couldn't feed my family since I had a four-month-old infant." As you can see, your honour, I merely stole food. Chivondo pleaded with the magistrate, "I can't feed my family since I lost my work."

He was prosecuted in Nairobi's Milimani Law Courts and pled guilty to two charges of theft and illegally handling stolen property.

"You are charged that on April 10, 2022 at Naivas Development House Moi Avenue in Nairobi, Nairobi County, you stole 5 kilograms Daawat Long Grain Rice, 500 kilograms American Gourmet Honey, 500 kilograms For Yo Kenya tea leaves, 5 litres Fresh Fri Cooking oil, 2 kilograms Kabras packed sugar, all worth Ksh 3,165 the property of Naivas Kenya Limited," the charge sheet read in part.

According to a cover report handed out in court by state prosecutor Anderson Gikunda, the accused, who works as a trolley pusher in Nairobi's CBD, went to Naivas and pretended to be a client.

The CCTV camera operators observed and were suspicious, so they followed the accused individual and apprehended him.

The prosecution informed the court that the accused had previously been caught at the same store but had been pardoned by the Nairobi Central Police Station's OCS in charge.
