Former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju has been named executive director of the Azimio la Umoja secretariat by ODM leader Raila Odinga.

"The appointment, which Hon. Tuju has accepted, takes effect immediately," Raila's spokesperson Dennis Onyango said in a statement issued Tuesday.

Tuju was chosen because he is a skilled communicator with prior experience in public affairs management.

"A trained communication professional, Hon Tuju has decades of political and government experience, having served as a member of Parliament, Cabinet Minister, and Jubilee Party Secretary-General."

Tuju will manage the strategy and program teams that will seek to guarantee the coalition's victory in the August 9 elections as Executive Director, coordinating all Azimio member parties.

Tuju's appointment comes just two months after he announced his resignation as the ruling party's secretary-general.

Despite being four kilometres from his major opponent's house, the former Rarienda MP expressed gratitude for the president's confidence in him.

"Thank you for sticking by me, even on a personal level, from the time I was in a terrible accident until I was able to stand here."
