A day after Raila promised him a post in his possible cabinet, Kenneth Marende changed his mind.

Kenneth Marende, the former Speaker of the National Assembly, has suspended his campaign for governor of Vihiga, a day after Raila Odinga, the Azimio presidential hopeful, promised him a post in his future cabinet.

If Mr Odinga secures the August 9 elections, he will appoint Mr Marende as Senate Speaker.

Marende told journalists in Vihiga on Tuesday, May 17, that he was honored to be nominated for Speaker by Raila.

"I can't ride two horses at the same time." He told The Standard, "Now that two good possibilities have delivered themselves, I'm picking the Speaker choice,"  revealing that he will not run for governor of Vihiga in the August 9 General Election.

Marende was a DAP-Kenya ticket holder.

"The Senate post is larger than that of a governor," as per the ex Speaker.

"I was engaged at home when a buddy called to tell me Raila had offered me a top State job," he explained.

Marende was set to oppose current Wilber Ottichilo, who is running on the ODM banner.

"He (Raila) understands I'll be useful in monitoring the decentralized units' activities," the ex-speaker stated.

Marende, 66, was the Speaker of the National Assembly from 2008 to 2013.

On January 15, 2008, he was elected Speaker, receiving 104 votes in the first round of voting against Francis ole Kaparo's 99 votes, and 104 votes in the second round against Kaparo's 102 votes.
