Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja's academic papers drama

The drama surrounding Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja's academic papers has taken an unexpected turn, leaving Kenyans even more perplexed.

Sakaja has been the talk of the town this week when it was revealed that he never graduated from the University of Nairobi (UoN), where he was pursuing an Actuarial Science degree.

Because Sakaja is targeting the Nairobi governorship, this controversy has gotten a lot of attention. A degree is required for every candidate for governor.

In an unusual twist of fate, the first-term senator showed a degree from Team University in Uganda, where he apparently did a management course and graduated in 2016.

Sakaja is currently mentioned as a noteworthy alumnus of the University of Nairobi's Faculty of Science and Technology, alongside Deputy President William Ruto and Prof George Saitoti, on the university's official website. He also has a Bachelor's of Art in Actuarial Science listed on his resume.

"Johnson Sakaja is the current Senator of Nairobi, having been born on February 2, 1985. He earned a bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science.

"During his fourth year at UoN, he Sakaja founded Arthur Johnson Consultants, a financial consulting firm," according to the website.

The webpage contradicts the institution's communication director, John Orinda, who confirmed on Sunday that Sakaja hadn't ever received a degree.

According to Orinda, the politician enrolled at UoN in 2003 but has never concluded his degree.

Sakaja's decision to offer a degree certificate from a little-known Ugandan university to be authorized to run is further puzzling, given that he already has one from a prestigious institution.

Sakaja told Nyashinski in 2020 that he has never gone to school outside the country despite graduating from Team University in 2016.
