Wanini Kireri dies after a short illness

Wanini Kireri, the first female commandant of the Prisons Staff Training College, dies as a senior assistant commissioner general of prisons.


Kireri succumbed on Tuesday at AAR Hospital on Kiambu Road after a short illness.


John Warioba, the Commissioner-General of Prisons, verified her demise, stating she died just after midday.


"The Kenya Prisons Service regrets to inform people of the unexpected death of the commandant, Prisons Staff Training College-Ruiru, SACGP Wanii Kireri, EBS," said brigadier Warioba in a statement.


Wanini joined the Kenya Prisons Service as a cadet officer in 1982.


She was remembered as a devoted servant who was determined to carry out her mission to the letter.


"On my behalf and behalf of the Kenya Prisons Service, I wish to express my heartfelt condolences to the family and the Kenya prisons fraternity as I join them at this moment of grief."


Warioba announced that funeral arrangements will be published in due course.
