Kakamega county marriage, wedding and church functions fee raised to Sh 50,000 by Kakamega county assembly

Due to a new law that is about to be passed by the County Assembly, brides and grooms who want to get married in Kakamega County will have to pay an extra fee.

A new charge of between Sh5,000 and Sh50,000 as a wedding fee has been suggested in the Kakamega County Finance Bill, 2022, depending on the preference of location.

Based on the area, religious activities such as crusades and other church gatherings will bring in a comparable amount of money.

With the proposed new taxes, the county government hopes to increase the amount of money made locally.

The plan seems to have irritated religious leaders and ordinary people, who have referred to the proposed fees as ludicrous.

During a public engagement session on the bill, Reverend William Ouya of Jesus Wonders Victory requested the County Assembly Finance and Planning Committee to lower the prices.

"We must be permitted to have church meetings and pray for our country and the politicians so that there is peace," Rev. Ouya said, adding that Kakamega was one of the counties with a lot of political activity.

A citizen, Justus Oyolo, believes that imposing extra fees on marriages and religious gatherings would lead to many people's going wrong.

If the bill becomes law, Oyolo thinks that "come we stay" marital setups may become the trend.

"There are a few of us who aren't married. "After the elections, I want to marry in one of our county's more tranquil locations, but the proposed tax might derail my plans," he added, suggesting a fee range of Sh2,000 to Sh10,000.
