The president of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, scolded his vice president, William Ruto, for continuing to criticise the government he is supposed to represent.
He said that the DP has been criticising the administration and making bogus promises to Kenyans about what he plans to do if he wins the election in August to replace his boss, who is getting ready to step down after serving for a second and last term.
Speaking on Saturday at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi during the celebration of this year's International Co-operative Day, known as "Ushirika Day" in Kenya, President Kenyatta expressed regret over the comments made by his Deputy, claiming he did not carry out his responsibilities while serving the government.
"When I hear certain individuals ever lament the shortcomings of the administration, it makes me very unhappy." President Kenyatta made a subtle criticism of his deputy president's campaign platform on Thursday. He said, "Someone who has been given a job to serve the country, instead of doing his job, he is busy making noise here and there."
After breaking up his relationship with President Kenyatta, DP Ruto joined the Jubilee government and has been critical of its performance.
Uhuru said about Ruto's platform, "Why didn't you do it when you were in the same position? All we are hearing is we will do this and that."
The Head of State defended Peter Munya, the cabinet secretary for agriculture, for reforming the industry. He said that William Ruto had done a bad job when he was in the same position.
As Kenyans travel to the polls, President Kenyatta said that no one should hold him responsible for the government's shortcomings and urged them to "think very carefully" before choosing their representatives.
The electoral commission has approved four candidates for the August 9 election, including Ruto.
Raila Odinga, who is running for the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance, is his major rival.
