The Hult Prize competition finals, which got underway on Monday, are being competed for by five Kenyan students who are currently in the US. The students got the prize on the final stage.
University students are challenged by the competition to use entrepreneurship to provide solutions to urgent societal concerns.
In alternative of plastic sanitary towels, Eco-Bana plans to develop biodegradable, environmentally responsible, and hygienic sanitary towels.
They won the Best Innovative Project for 2022 award at the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Awards last week.
They won the top spot in the Hult Prize Regional Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, in May. And on July 21, this year, they won the kids' category at the Kiambu County Innovation Day, placing third overall.
St. Paul's University has given the innovation assistance in a variety of ways, including by incorporating Eco-Bana as a business and encouraging domestic and foreign investors.
As a university, we also work with Eco-Bana; among other things, we mentor them, provide ongoing support and guidance, and assist them in obtaining passports and visas.
The team's sponsor continues, "On May 19 this year, the team won the Kenya Climate Innovation Center Competition hosted at Strathmore University, which saw them pocket Sh900,000, many awards, and a free incubation programme, which saw them pocket Sh900,000."
