Banned cooking oil brands in Kenya over toxism

Ten cooking oil brands have been temporarily banned due to standards violations.
These include Top Fry, Postman, Rina, Salit, Tilly, Fresh Fri, Fresh Fri with Garlic Oil, Fry Mate, Gold, and Pure Olive Gold.

In a letter, Peter Kaigwara, who is in charge of market surveillance at the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) (RETRAK), told the Retail Traders Association of Kenya what to do.

He says that the products have not been banned but that they will be taken off the market and checked before they are sold again.

The action aims to safeguard both producers' financial interests and consumers' possible damage.

"Please note that this is only a temporary suspension. This will give the makers of non-compliant products time to take the right steps under the supervision of KEGS to make sure that their products meet the standards of the relevant Kenya Standards and Standards Act Cap 496, Laws of Kenya before they can be put back on the market."

KEBS also told RETRAK to make sure that the above brands are taken off the market until the necessary criteria are met.

"The goal of this letter is to draw your attention to the non-compliant edible oil and fat brands listed below that did not meet the standard's requirements and to ask that your office alert your members to recall these brands and remove them from the supply chain from your members' outlets across the nation, " read the letter.
