Linet Chepkorir, also known as Linet Toto, is a Bomet Women's Representative. On Thursday, while Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was on his first international trip, she ran the show in Rwanda.
Mr. Gachagua flew to Rwanda on Thursday for the Youth Connect Africa Summit, which was organized by Rwandan President Reuben Kagame and attended by many African leaders.
Mr. Gachagua brought Toto with him for the event. He praised the 24-year-old and said she was a political miracle for Kenya.
Members of parliament, Sylvanus Osoro, Ndindi Nyoro, Patric Munene, Mohammed Ali, Pamela Njoki, Vincent Kawaya, John Paul Mwirigi, Ken Aramat, and Karugu Thangwa were among the other dignitaries that traveled.
Gachagua said, "I came with 12 young leaders who were only just elected and to whom we have entrusted special obligations in the National Assembly so that the young people may begin to assume their proper position."
As the audience applauded, he said, "I came with one of the wonders in our nation, a small young lady, 24 years old, and was chosen as the Woman Rep of Bomet County, beating a mature, experienced woman.
Gachagua, alias Riggy G, encouraged the African youngsters by pointing out that over 33% of elected politicians were young people during the recently held August General Election.
He remarked, "In the most recent elections, which we conducted on the 9th of August, our National Assembly has 349 members. Young people of your age went into the polls, sold the youth agenda, and claimed they had what it took, and the people were so convinced. "
"The people of Kenya demonstrated their trust and belief in youth, with 33% of all NA members elected being under the age of 35."
In a similar way, Gachagua told African leaders that the best way to improve the continent's stability and future was to give the next generation more power.
"You have the destiny of the continent and its inhabitants, particularly the elderly population, in your hands. You possess the skills necessary to advance the continent," he said.
"Granted, you have the maturity, vitality, enthusiasm, devotion, and—most importantly—brains to turn the continent around," he said.
He emphasized that young people held the key to the continent's economic growth, and he pleaded with them to rise to the occasion and assume their roles.
"Don't avoid responsibility; you have the ideas, the creativity, the energy, and the drive; all that's needed is for you to take up your position and carry out the necessary tasks, "he urged.
"I'm challenging the young people of Africa to assume leadership roles in their nation when you return home and advance the youth agenda from inside. Choose the appropriate seat at the table of decision-making."
