leader of the Narc-Kenya party, Martha Karua

The leader of the Narc-Kenya party, Martha Karua, said recently that President William Ruto should be the first person to apologize to lawyer Miguna Miguna for sending him away in 2018.

According to Karua, after allowing the lawyer's return on Thursday, the Head of State should not be seen as vindicating his actions, as the Head of State is a major contributor to the problems that the lawyer experienced roughly five years ago.

She said that because Miguna was kicked out during the Jubilee government when Ruto was the deputy president, it is now up to him to apologize on behalf of his former boss, Uhuru Kenyatta, who is now the president.

In an interview with BBC News, Karua said that "What occurred was a major error and atrocity by the government of Kenya, of which the present president was a happy deputy president at the time."

"He cannot distance himself from the activity. Indeed, if he had been around today, I would have expected him to have apologized to Miguna on his own behalf and on behalf of the just-gone President. They committed that atrocity, their government did."

Karua went on to say that Miguna's expulsion was wrong. He said that if Raila Odinga's coalition party, Azimio la Umoja One Kenya, had won the presidential election in August, they would have also let the outspoken attorney come back to Kenya.

"As many people may remember, Raila Odinga had said that I would manage the docket on issues relating to the constitution and the rule of law throughout our campaign. As Karua, Odinga's deputy president and running partner put it, Miguna would have been able to exercise his rights and get his passport back."

On Thursday morning, Miguna landed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) after almost five years in exile.
