In what authorities call a mistaken identification, a top Pakistani journalist was fatally murdered Sunday night along the Nairobi-Magadi highway.
Arshad Sharif was shot in the head and killed by police after he and his driver broke through a roadblock set up to check on cars using the route.
They were flagged down at a roadblock held by a squad of police officials while travelling from Magadi town to Nairobi, according to the police.
According to police headquarters, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority will handle the matter.
A senior police officer acknowledged the murder and said a complete statement would be made public later.
"We had a shooting that was really a mistaken identification situation involving a journalist. Later, we will provide additional details, " the officer promised.
Police said that after a carjacking incident in Nairobi's Pangani neighbourhood when a kid was held hostage, there was a request for police to stop a car like the one they were driving at the roadblock.
They were pulled over and asked for identification after Sharif's automobile had made its appearance at the roadblock a little while earlier.
They allegedly ignored the barricade and continued driving.
This led to a quick pursuit and shooting, which resulted in Sharif's death. His driver was hurt in the rollover and was sent to the hospital.
He finally said that he was a developer and that he and the employee who had died were going to a place in Magadi.
The journalist was well-known in Pakistan, where word of the event quickly spread.
Sharif's wife, Javeria Siddiqui, verified the awful news on Twitter and acknowledged that her husband had died in Kenya.
She wrote, "I lost a buddy, a spouse, and my favourite journalist today. According to the police, he was shot in Kenya. "
She also encouraged people and the media to refrain from posting on social media any images of their families, private information, or Sharif's last images from the hospital.
Sharif formerly worked for ARY News, and after leaving the network, he moved to Dubai.
After the news of Sharif's passing spread, condolences poured in from all around the nation.
Imran Khan, the head of the PTI and a former prime minister, sent his condolences after hearing about the death of journalist Arshad Sharif.
Hina Pervaiz Butt, the leader of the PML-N, offered her sincere condolences for the journalist's passing, while Ali Zaidi, the leader of the PTI, too, conveyed his sorrow for Shariff's passing.
"Sharif's passing was seen as a loss for Pakistan's media and by President Dr Arif Alvi."
"May his supporters and his relatives have the fortitude to deal with this loss," Alvi said. "May his soul rest in peace," he added.
The prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif, expressed his profound sadness. He sent prayers and condolences to the journalist's family.
