After being fired as Sevilla's head coach after a 4-1 home loss to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Wednesday, Julen Lopetegui said he felt "sadness and grief."
Some supporters cheered Lopetegui at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan and focused their ire towards the management after the team's poor run of play saw them drop to 17th in La Liga.
According to rumors in Spain, Jorge Sampaoli, who led Sevilla during the 2016–17 campaign, has offered to take over.
Sevilla said in a statement that "Lopetegui finishes a brilliant tenure, with three great seasons in which the club achieved all of its goals with flying colors and a fourth season in which results did not materialize, with Sevilla on five points out of a possible 21 in La Liga."
"Lopetegui will be known for a long time as one of Sevilla's best managers after the club won its sixth Europa League in a spectacular way in the 2019–20 season."
Before the club made the announcement, the coach told Spanish television that he was leaving.
Lopetegui said to Movistar, "I am thankful to the entirety of Sevilla, its supporters, and the players who have given me three wonderful seasons. I feel grief and anguish leaving a team that I love very much and will always have a special place in my heart," the man said.
In order to save money, Sevilla sold the defensive core under Lopetegui in the summer. Jules Kounde went to Barcelona, Diego Carlos was acquired by Aston Villa, and winger Lucas Ocampos was loaned to Ajax.
The former coach of Spain and Real Madrid took over in June 2019, and in his first season, he led the Andalusian team to a record-tying sixth Europa League championship.
However, the squad has gone nine matches without a victory in any competition following three straight fourth-place performances under Lopetegui.
