Fatuma Gedi new CRA top job

Fatuma Gedi, the former representative for Wajir, and George Midiwo, the nephew of ODM leader Raila Odinga, have both been given high-level jobs in the Commission on Revenue Allocation.

The two individuals were selected by the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya alliance to represent the minority in Parliament, according to a notification that was sent by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetangula.

Midiwo filed for the position of member of the East African Legislative Assembly, but Azimio did not nominate her for consideration. Meanwhile, Gedi was unsuccessful in his bid to become a member of the assembly.

Gedi is a well-known person in Azimio, but she lost her bid to defend the Wajir county seat in the last election. She has a lot to celebrate with this win, though.

As a part of the Azimio alliance, the Jubilee party, which had two seats before, would also benefit from this change.

Now, it's up to the Departmental Committee on Finance and National Planning to look into the candidates' backgrounds and qualifications before sending their names to the National Assembly's plenary session to be approved or rejected.

Wetangula said in his message that he would provide the names to the convened House "upon the assembly of the House on Tuesday, November 29, 2022," which was the date of the meeting.

People named by the Kenya Kwanza Alliance are Benedict Muasya Mutiso, Wilfred Koitamet Ole Kina, Vincent Kuko, Isabel Nyambura, and Hadija Juma.

Article 215 of the Constitution stipulates that political parties are responsible for nominating seven members of the CRA committee.

The governing party has five seats available, while the minority party only has two.

It is likely that Parliament will take care of the nominations before December 31, which is when the current commissioners' terms will end.

According to the criteria for nomination, the political parties each put forth two candidates to represent their party in the National Assembly based on the numerical strength of their membership.

The political parties that are currently represented in the Senate each put forth one nominee, which brings the total number of nominees to five.

The president submits a nomination for the chairman, which must then be confirmed by the National Assembly.

The Principal Secretary of the Treasury serves in an advisory capacity on the panel.

On the list of 139 people who wanted to join the panel through the Senate, most of the applications came from people who were friends with Ruto and Raila.

They were also one of 37 people who applied for the position of National Assembly member.
