Aisha Jumwa, the cabinet secretary for public service and gender, has said that public employees will get a pay rise within the next 100 days.
On Monday, Jumwa said that the ministry has plans to implement a number of changes to enhance service delivery across the nation. She was speaking after inspecting the Nairobi Huduma Center.
"The public service is depressed in areas of pay and other perks, and I expect in my first 100 days in office I will launch the proposal to enhance public officials' remuneration," said Jumwa.
CS Jumwa said that she would study the county wage bill and challenge assertions that it is excessive, notwithstanding the Senate's assertion that it has been above the legal threshold of 35%.
She said that with fewer than a million employees serving 50 million Kenyans, the public sector was not overstaffed.
CS Jumwa also said that the ministry would look at the hours of all 52 Huduma Centers across the country to improve service in all 47 counties and open new centres.
According to Jumwa, "18 Huduma Centers around the country, including the one at the G.P.O., will now be open for longer to provide services that are in high demand from 7 AM to 7 PM."
"Our goal is to have a Huduma Center in every sub-county, but considering the current economy, we expect to have at least 100 in the next five years."
Along with CS Jumwa, Public Service Principal Secretary Mary Kimonye expressed alarm over the unclaimed identity cards and urged Kenyans to show up at the centre to pick up their credentials.
PS Kimonye added, "We invite the Wananchi to come to pick them up since there are now 33,000 uncollected IDs, as well as roughly 3,000 birth certificates and smart licenses."
