The county recently issued a regulation that tried to outlaw any public religious meetings, commonly known as crusades, in estates and residential areas. Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang' Nyong'o has now reversed that decision.
Prof. Nyong'o explained the directive, which has caused Kenyans to feel a wide range of emotions. She said that the goal was to control noise in public places, not to stop religious groups from holding crusades.
After a meeting with church leaders on Tuesday, he said on social media that they had decided to limit the volume to protect the rights of the general public.
"We had good discussions with the Nyanza Region's leadership of the clergy, headed by Dr. Ogonyo Ngede. By eliminating noise pollution, as a county, we did not outright forbid crusades but wanted them to be controlled and done without violating the rights of others, " On Twitter, the governor posted.
In an effort to reduce noise pollution in the city, the county on Thursday issued a notice banning prayer rallies. The notification was issued by acting City Manager Abala Wanga.
Wanga ordered religious organizations to limit meetings in churches based on public objections.
On November 3, 2022, Mr. Wanga said, "A notice is being sent to all religious institutions to make sure that all public religious meetings in estates and residential areas stop and are held on church property instead of in public space."
