Mulot SIM swap ring leader David Mutai arrested

David Mutai, also known as Hillary Langat Matindwet, is thought to be the leader of the Mulot SIM swap network. He was arrested in Kericho Town early on Friday morning.

He was detained in front of the nearby KCB bank.

When members of the public saw him and called the police to the scene, they were able to capture him.

Before he was to be transported to Nairobi and ultimately prosecuted, he was escorted to the neighbourhood DCI offices.

The head DCI for the Rift Valley region, Francis Wanjau, confirmed the arrest and said that the man was being questioned.

"Our police are speaking to him before we know the next step," he added. He was detained this morning.

In the Bomet elections of 2022, Mutai ran for MCA but was unsuccessful.

On Wednesday, police revealed the name of a man they said was the mastermind behind the infamous Mulot SIM swap ring.

The DCI said that the suspect, who was at large at the time, was wanted in many instances and had arrest warrants hanging over his head.

Con artists stole Sh941,000 from a Rift Valley legislator's bank account while he was out of the country on business between December 2 and 3. This led to the arrest of two suspects.
