Lazio, who are currently in fifth place in the Serie A standings after two consecutive losses, will be desperate to defeat Sassuolo this weekend at the Mapei Stadium.

A loss would all but end their likelihood of winning the league.

Despite their recent success, Lazio's chances of winning the Serie A championship were slim given the two-horse battle between Juventus and Napoli in the current season.

Ciro Immobile gave his team the lead after 15 minutes as Lazio succumbed to Lecce in their breakout Serie A performance.

After scoring twice in the second half, Lecce rallied to defeat their opponent 2-1.

And to make matters worse, Immobile and company allowed Empoli to score an equalizer in stoppage time of their home game after taking a 2-0 lead.

Lazio, however, did not play in midweek during the Coppa Italia matches, so they now enjoy a full week of relaxation compared to other clubs in Serie A.

The team is now in fifth place, but there is still a 13-point deficit to league leaders Napoli, as well as a six-point difference to second- and third-place Juventus and AC Milan.

Just Napoli and Juventus have allowed fewer goals than Lazio's 14 in Serie A, and Inter is only three points behind them despite having a higher goal difference than them.

Rome's team has also scored 19 goals, which is more than Juventus and more than just Inter, Milan, and Napoli.

After the first two Serie A games, Sassuolo has fallen more quickly than ever into the relegation zone.

The club's seven-point lead over the bottom three teams will give them tremendous confidence that they can stay in the league this season, although this is primarily because Hellas Verona and Sampdoria have played so poorly in comparison to Sassuolo's performance.

Even worse, Sassuolo lost their comeback game against Sampdoria 2-1 after Domenico Berardi scored from the penalty spot to make it 2-0.

Sassuolo fell 2-1 despite another penalty kick from Berardi against Fiorentina that was converted, thanks to a goal conceded in extra time.
