Investigators in Mombasa have taken into custody a guy who they say was the mastermind behind the theft of 900,000 Kenyan shillings from a microfinance bank.

Investigators think that the 22-year-old suspect stole the money from the microfinance institution using a high-tech plan.

He was found dragged out of his hiding place in Nyamondo village, Gucha south, Kisii county.

Detectives working for the DCI's intelligence support team followed the suspect all the way back to his hometown.

The suspect is accused of stealing the money by breaking into the Sacco's computer systems and then sending the money to six Mpesa accounts that he owned.

Friday, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations said that when the suspect was arrested, only 600,000 Kenyan shillings were found on him.

According to DCI, the high-level fraud took place on December 31 of the previous year and was carried out between the hours of 3:30 and 5 p.m.

The DCI said in a statement that the suspect "was bouncing between two homes at the time." One was in Witeithie Estate in Thika Town, and the other was in Gitambaya in Ruiru.

The Director of Criminal Investigation (DCI) said that "once the suspect understood that he was on our radar, he fled to his remote house in Kisii County."

The fact that the investigators were able to find the suspect when he was on the trip on Friday morning surprised the suspect.

After a careful search, 600,000 Kenyan shillings in cash, three mobile phones, and an HP laptop, which were all thought to have been used in the theft, were found.

The suspect was finally sent to Mombasa, where he will be questioned and tried for the terrible things he did.
