The official announcement of the names of the people who will serve on the advisory board of President William Ruto's signature initiative, the Hustler Fund, has finally been made public by the government.
Irene Karimi was given the position of chairperson of the newly established Financial Inclusion Fund, also known as the Hustler Fund, by President Ruto in a gazette notice that was published on January 20, 2023. Karimi will serve in this capacity for three years.
In the same notice that was published in the Gazette, Cooperatives and MSME Development Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui went ahead and appointed three individuals to the Hustler Fund Advisory Board.
These individuals are Lawrence Kibet Chelimo, Paul Ndore Musyimi, and Hardlyne Lusui, respectively.
The terms of the appointments, which are to begin on January 13, 2023, and are to be made following Section 10(I) of the Public Finance Management Act, will also be for three years.
"Following the rules, the board is responsible for providing supervision over the management of the Hustler Fund."
Additionally, the board is comprised of three individuals who are not public authorities.
The controller of the fund is considered an ex-officio member, as stated by CS Chelugui in a later message to the newsrooms.
Ms. Karimi has worked in the field of project management for over 30 years, having done so for a variety of organizations, including USAID/Kenya, Chemonics International, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and the Kenya Investment Mechanism (KIM), amongst others.
She graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration from Andrews University in Berrien Springs, which is located in Michigan.
In addition, she is a Certified Performance Technologist (ISPI, 2007) and has other certificates that are pertinent to her field.
On the other hand, Mr. Chelimo has more than 16 years of expertise in a variety of fields, including treasury, tax, applied intelligence and innovation, investor relations, financial reporting and analysis, strategic planning and analysis, corporate development roles, and financial markets.
Before being appointed to the board of directors of the Hustler Fund, he held positions of responsibility in several prestigious organizations, including the World Bank, DfID, the Africa Development Bank, KenGen, and the Nairobi Stock Exchange.
He graduated from the University of Nairobi with bachelor's degrees in law and commerce (finance option), as well as a master's degree in business administration.
In addition, he is currently enrolled in Strathmore University's Master of Public Policy and Management (MPPM) program and will graduate with that degree soon.
The Cabinet Secretary, Chelugui, stated that Lawyer Musyimi has been a staunch supporter of President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Lawyer Musyimi possesses both a Bachelor of Laws and a Master of Laws, both of which she earned from the University of Nairobi. In addition to that, he was awarded a Postgraduate Diploma by the Kenya School of Law.
The Kenya Methodist University awarded Ms. Lusui a Bachelor of Information Science degree, while the Eldoret Polytechnic awarded her a Diploma in Information Studies.
At the moment, she is attending classes at the University of Nairobi to get a Master's degree in Women's Leadership and Governance.
The nominations were made after Cabinet Secretary Chelugui said at the beginning of this month that the suggested candidates were undergoing background investigations by a variety of state entities.
