Nairobi Central Business District over the entry of Chinese businesses

Hundreds of Kenyan merchants protested on February 28, 2023, in the Nairobi Central Business District over the entry of Chinese businesses into the Kenyan market.

The merchants, who were mostly located in the city centres, claimed that Chinese merchants had pushed them out of operation because the Chinese merchants offered items at prices that were far lower than their own.

An electronics vendor named Peris, who was present at the Nyamakima market, was quoted in The Standard as saying, "I'm here to demonstrate against the encroachment of the Chinese dealers into the Kenyan market."

It's not right that outsiders are acting as both the seller and the maker of the product, yet that's exactly what they're doing.

They function both as wholesalers and retailers in the Kenyan market. They have prevented us from doing business.

The merchants led a procession through the Central Business District (CBD), carrying banners and chanting as they went. Their route included Harambee Avenue, which is home to the presidential and vice presidential offices.

The police were compelled to repel them, which prevented the merchants from conducting demonstrations on important routes like Haile Selassie Avenue and other thoroughfares.

After the temporary suspension of China Square, a big shop located on Thika Superhighway that sells a variety of items at cheap rates, the demonstrations took place as a result.
