A preacher in Mozambique died after he tried to fast for 40 days like Christ did, as told in the Bible.

Francisco Barajah, the pastor of the Santa Trindade Evangelical Church, passed away at a hospital in Beira, where he had been taken in a serious state.

After 25 days without consuming or drinking anything, he had lost so much weight that he was unable to stand. His age was 39.

Barajah was identified as having severe anemia and digestive organ failure.

Even though people tried to bring him back to life with natural ingredients and watery meals, he died on Wednesday.

The pastor also taught French in the city of Messica in the central province of Manica, which borders Zimbabwe.

According to members of the Santa Trindade Church, it was typical for the preacher and his congregation to fast, but rarely for so long.

His brother, Marques Manuel Barajah, said that the pastor had fasted, but he disputed the professional prognosis of his demise.

He said, "The fact is that my brother battled low blood pressure."

That is not the first time that a tragic effort has been made to replicate Christ's 40-day fast in the wilderness as reported in Matthew's Gospel.

Reporters said that a Zimbabwean man died after 30 days in 2015.

A British pathologist found that a woman from London died in 2006 while she was in the middle of a long fast.
