Tension in Azimio as Police raids Matiangs home

According to reports, a team of highly trained police officers was dispatched to the residence of the former cabinet secretary for the Interior, Fred Matiang'i.

On the night of February 8, 2023, according to the first reports that reached the news desk, law enforcement officials encircled the residence of Matiang'i in Karen.

Raila Odinga, the head of Azimio la Umoja, had already returned to his residence but had to rush to the residence of a former minister.

He went on to say that more than two hundred lawyers were now trying to defend the former CS and that they would continue to do so steadfastly.

Odinga, for his part, shared Matiang'i's astonishment at the cops' decision to have the arrest take place during the nighttime hours.

He accused the government of President William Ruto of conducting a witch hunt and asked the authorities to adhere to the law.

"I can confirm to every Kenyan in this country that the life of Matiang’i is at risk. We don’t know the intention of wanting to invade Matiang’i’s home at this time of the night. We don’t know why they want to arrest him and where they want to take him," the lawyer said.

"They want to use the power of the police to terrorize this country. It won't be accepted and we will not allow it to happen to Matiang'i or anybody else.

"We are here, and will stand with Matiang’i and anybody else to ensure that the law of this country is respected," he said.
