Kamlesh Pattni was involved in the Goldenberg scandal, a $600 million Gold scam
Kamlesh Pattni alias Brother Paul

Al Jazeera's Investigation Unit (I-Unit) says that a gold smuggler who was part of a scam in the 1990s that cost Kenya 10% of its economy has moved his illegal trade business to Zimbabwe and Dubai.

Kamlesh Pattni was involved in the Goldenberg scandal, a $600 million precious metal scheme that resulted in allegations of corruption against several officials in the administration of the time's president, Daniel Arap Moi. Pattni was acquitted after a lengthy trial.

From his headquarters in Dubai, Pattni, who subsequently self-identified as a preacher and occasionally uses the moniker "Brother Paul," is now operating a similar scam in Zimbabwe.

The information came out as part of Al Jazeera's Gold Mafia, a four-part investigation into some of Southern Africa's biggest gold traffickers and most corrupt government officials.

Al Jazeera reporters who were dressed up as Chinese thieves and trying to smuggle more than $100 million had a lot of options at Pattni.

In order to do this, he would convert the illicit funds into gold, which is then shipped from Zimbabwe to Dubai, where Pattni is the owner of a variety of precious metals trading firms.

Suzan General Trade, Pattni's company, sells Zimbabwean gold bars and jewellery. For selling gold abroad, the administration pays the business.

According to Pattni's plan, the dirty money would be sent to Harare and said to be the money Suzan General Trade made from shipping gold.

The money is then used to buy more valuable metals in Zimbabwe, which are then sent to one of Pattni's businesses in Dubai.

Since Pattni owns both the importer in Dubai and the exporter in Zimbabwe, he has the chance to hide the money.

The money would then be deposited into a Dubai bank account and look to originate from legal gold commerce.  Pattni would collect a 10% commission on his own sales.
