Captain William K. Ruto has been named the new managing director of the Kenya Ports Authority by Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen.


In his new position, Captain Ruto will continue to work for the next three years.


According to a gazette notification, Capt. William K. Ruto has been appointed by the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport to lead the Kenya Ports Authority for a term of three years beginning on March 10, 2023.

Over the last three years, KPA has been without an MD.


Capt. Ruto has extensive maritime experience. 

He began working for KPA in 1991 as a cadet marine deck officer and worked his way up to become the general manager of operations and then a harbour master.


He served as the Kisumu Port's general manager before assuming this position.

CS Murkomen said, "I am certain that his depth of expertise stretching 32 years will be necessary to guarantee the Authority fulfils its purpose to the people of Kenya and has greatly contributed to the expansion of the Kenyan economy."

Capt. William Ruto graduated from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology with an MBA in Strategic Management (JKUAT).


He also boasts the maximum qualification for a ship captain (Class 1 Master Mariner) from South Tyneside Marine College in the UK. 

He is also a member of the International Harbour Master's Association (UK) and an associate fellow of the Nautical Institute (AF-NI).
