Muga K’Olale dies in Homabay

The long-serving former chair of the university lecturers’ union, Muga K’Olale, has died. Mr K’Olale, who chaired the Universities Academic Staff Union (Uasu) until his resignation in July 2021, died at Matata Nursing Home in Oyugis Town, Homa Bay County, on Saturday evening.

According to the hospital’s management, he was admitted on March 21. "He had been at the hospital for some time," matron Margaret Orimba said, adding he had been seriously ill this past week. He was suffering from heart-related conditions.

After being co-opted into the union, K'Olale quit Uasu. The Egerton University chapter of Uasu went to court to challenge this decision.

On to another story, a police officer died Saturday night after an angry mob attacked him for intercepting marijuana in the Kaler area of Nyatike Sub-County, Migori.

At about 9 p.m. on Saturday, the officer, who was based at Kaler Patrol Base, stopped a boda boda that was carrying weed. He and another officer were on night duty.

The Sunday Standard says that Migori police commander Mark Wanjala confirmed the incident. He said that the boda boda rider called the police after he was caught attracting a crowd that attacked the officer.

"The boda boda man had a motorbike that was carrying bhang, and they arrested him. One person raised the alarm, and the community came to his rescue," Wanjala said.

The Migori police boss claimed the mob also attacked the officer with machetes and cut him several times on the head before stabbing him.

Later, the hurt officer was taken to Ombo Mission Hospital in Migori town, where he died from his wounds. "We have launched our investigations into the matter," Wanjala said.
